Another season came rolling around last weekend for London Collections: Men, the menswear counterpart to London Fashion Week, and the styles and trends from days gone by came rolling round as well.
Overwhelmingly, the trend for autumn/winter 15 in menswear comes straight out of the 1970s, which is great news for vintage lovers. If you’re not a fan of flares and fur, don’t worry we also spotted more subtle 1970s-inspired looks. If you are a fan of the more extroverted look, now’s the time to wear it!
Todd Lynn, always a lover of rock ‘n’ roll tailoring, came out with androgynous suits for men and women in black and bright pea green. Trousers were tight on the hips and flared at the bottom –Mick Jagger would be all over this.
Is there anything cosier than a vintage knit on a cold winter’s day? From the Fair Isle knits at Joseph to the chunky cable knit polo necks at Pringle of Scotland, it’s not only cosy for next season, but it’s fashionable.
Shaggy furs were everywhere at LCM. We spotted it at Topman, Moschino and Sibling to name a few. The bigger and louder the better; don’t be afraid to go floor-length and take your inspiration from the playboys of the era.
If you like the concept of fur but find it a little hard to pull off, shearling was also on the agenda for Tiger of Sweden and Xander Zhou and it will last for decades.
Talking of Xander Zhou, the entire show was inspired by a cowboy look, much-loved in the 1970s with the rise of the popular TV show Dallas. It’s time to dig out your old tasselled leather jackets, cowboy boots and denim shirts.
Finally, for the suit-loving gentlemen, brown is back. Tiger of Sweden showed chic tailoring in a quintessentially 1970’s camel brown to do away with its previously dowdy image and make it smart and fashion forward.
The 1970s was an eclectic era for fashion, and one in which men really honed their own individual style. For sartorially-minded gentleman, it’s a great era to reference in your wardrobe whatever your personal style.
You’ll find original pieces that are inspiring the catwalks today at our next fair, The Vintage Collections, on 15th February. Save the date!
