If you’re looking for outfit inspiration now that the sun has come out, we’ve been digging through the archives to find some vintage fashion shoots that capture our dream summer look.
Vogue 1959, Louise Dahl Wolfe
This is how to do glamour on the beach. This was shot by legendary American photographer Louise Dahl Wolfe who was known for shooting on location and using natural light – a style that became known as “environmental fashion photography.” Dahl studied Design and Colour at California School of Fine Arts and we think it shows in the perfectly balanced orange and pink hues in this image. We’ll be making sure our swimsuit, straw hat and parasol are matching this year!
1952, Henry Clarke
Model Sue Jenks looks effortless and carefree in her white Joset Walker dress in this shot. The photographer, Henry Clarke, favoured more natural shots that captured every day moments rather than staged poses and we like the way he’s captured her dress blowing in the breeze.
1935, Blackpool
This may not be a fashion editorial but look how stylish these women are! As women became more active and involved in sports, loose, ‘pyjama’ styles became the fashion. These ladies are off to play golf in Blackpool but we think their patterned vest tops and lounge trousers would look rather chic for a picnic in the park this summer!

How could we not include this iconic image of Muriel Maxwell by Horst P Horst for Vogue? A simple white t-shirt is a staple that will go with many outfits and this image is how to dress it up for a classic summer look. We’ll be on the hunt for a pair of sunglasses like these at the next fair and the way her striped handbag matches her headband and lipstick is styling perfection.
